Supermarket brand credit cards
Australia’s two largest supermarket chains each offer their own credit card – Coles MasterCard and Woolworths Money Everyday credit card. These supermarket credit cards work the same way as regular reward credit cards however the two main points of different are the point earn rates on offer and the specific rewards and discounts offered to shoppers.
Woolworths Money Everyday credit card:
Rewards Program: Everyday Money Reward Points
Reward points: Earn 1 point for every $1 spent on eligible purchases everywhere Visa is accepted. The earn rate increases significantly when you use the credit card at Woolworth Group Stores. For example, you can earn up to 3 points per $1 spent on Woolworths select products.
Redeeming points: Every four months your points will be automatically converted to a Woolworths Money Shopping Card which will be sent to you. You can then redeem the card in-store at Woolworths supermarkets, BIG W, BWS, Dan Murphys, Master Home Improvement, Thomas Dux, participating Caltex Woolworths fuel outlets and online at Cellarmasters. You must earn a minimum of 4,000 reward points in a four month period to receive a $20 Woolworths Money Shopping Card.

Supermarket rewards programs
Now that you’ve hopefully got your head around supermarket branded reward credit cards we’re going to explore supermarket reward programs. This is another method for being rewarded for stocking up on your groceries. The table below compares Australia’s two competitor supermarket rewards program – Woolworths Rewards (replaced Everyday Rewards) and Flybuys.
Woolworths Rewards | Flybuys | |
---|---|---|
Supermarket | Woolworths | Coles |
Earning points | You can only earn Woolworth dollars by purchasing items with an orange ticket in a Woolworths or BWS store (there’s around 500 rotating products) | Flybuys members can earn points on every item they purchase in Coles Supermarkets |
Points value | $1 Woolworths Dollar = $1 AUD off a future shop | Flybuys points are redeemed for flybuys dollars – 2,000 flybuys points = $10 flybuys dollars |
Redeeming points | When your Woolworths Dollars balance reaches $10 you’ll automatically get $10 off your next shop when you scan your Woolworths rewards card at Woolworths or a BWS store | Points can be redeemed for hundreds of reward options from shopping vouchers, gift cards, products, travel and lifestyle experiences |
Partners | You can only earn Woolworths Dollars at Woolworths supermarkets and BWS stores | You can earn flybuys points at with more than 20 partners from every category including, travel, entertainment, car and home insurance |
What they say | Woolworths estimates the average grocery shopper will earn a $10 reward from the program every 7.4 weeks | Coles says, on average, its customers are earning enough points to get $10 off their shop in under six weeks. |
At the end of the day if you’re deciding between the Woolworths Rewards loyalty program and flybuys it comes down to how you’d like to be rewarded for your grocery shopping habits. Would you rather earn points and receive discounts on your shopping (Woolworths) or would you rather redeem your points for a wide range of rewards from shopping vouchers to hotels, toasters to a bottle of red!?
